Copywriting isn't so terribly hard as a lot of people will have you believe. But on the other hand there's nothing wrong at all by learning about the more commonly seen mistakes in copywriting that will work against you. If you're learning about copywriting, then you'll want to remember the following three mistakes.
This one can seem that it applies universally to all writing, but even in copywriting you want to watch your p's and q's when it comes to good grammar. You should always speak in terms of benefits and not features, and everything you write must be clearly stated and to the point. So those are just a couple things, out of many, that need to be right, and if they aren't then you'll just seeing the sales numbers go down. Good English forms the backbone of any sales copy, which means if you don't have your semi-colon and comma in place, then you'll see your prospects getting turned off. There are many finer details and aspects of copyrwiting that need to be kept in mind if you want to produce copy that converts. Also, be sure to write in clear and simple language and always avoid high-dollar words. Ok, so just try to keep in mind that things like spelling, grammar, and punctuation most definitely can adversely impact your conversions. You want to give out all of the required information but don't make the mistake of revealing too much in your copy. If you haven't learned how to keep your copy balanced figuring out how to do this can be tricky. The goal of your sales letter is to both educate the potential customer about what you are selling and, at the exact same time, create in him a desperate urge to buy from you. A good technique for this is to write all about the benefits of your chosen product so that the potential client or customer knows exactly what he or she will get from the sale. You don't want to include a lot of specific features because, otherwise, the customer won't want to buy it. Creating the urge to buy means keep the fluff down while still including the important details that make the product desirable. Many times copywriters praise the product so much that they forget that it's not about them, but it's about the customers. So keep the focus on your potential customers and make your sales copy really targeted.
About the price of your product or service and where you put it is critical. Some copywriters make the mistake of letting the prospects know about the price about the product/service too early. But what's wrong in that? When people see the price they immediately start working on their decision about the product. You first want them to know about the benefits and then about the price, so that they don't take their decision just based on the price. After your research is performed, then relax and write - you can always edit later, so don't worry about how the first draft comes out. Also, make sure your price is clearly mentioned so that your readers won't miss it. Some sales letters make this hard, which is a mistake.
It's easy to easily eliminate conversion killing mistakes simply by increasing your awareness of them. Another way to help is by proof-reading, editing, and revising as needed - so get in the habit of doing it.
